February meeting

February was the first meeting of 2017, when Diane and Walter shared first place in a competition for “Christmas” and “Festive” images. We discussed possible projects

for 2017 and shared information about some local photographic exhibitions that are taking place over the next few weeks.
With reduced numbers we will only meet every other month this year. The topic for our March meeting is ‘Moonlight’.

The group needs new members so if you are interested in joining this group please contact me.

March Meeting

The "Moonlight” competition had this very atmospheric picture take by Walter as the clear winner. Meanwhile Jeff's stall at the March monthly meeting aroused potential interest from one or two members. "Easter" is our next competition at Jeff’s house in May. Hopefully we can gauge progress in our new venture, to produce an attractive local calendar for sale later in the year. Watch this space!

May meeting

In the May Easter competition, Jeff had first place (St Thomas, High Lane decorated for Easter) and second (hanging egg). Derek and Walter were third equals. The group spent most of the May meeting selecting a set of pictures for the proposed 2018 calendar – not an easy task! A provisional set of calendar pictures was displayed for the group leaders meeting. The quality of printing was noted as an important factor, but the proposed price seemed attractive. Meanwhile, group members are taking more photos before our final choice is made in July. The topic for our July meeting competition is Churches.

July meeting

The July competition “Churches” was won by Diane (St Stephen’s church in Vienna), with Walter second (Chadkirk), and Derek third (Edale church).

But most of our efforts went into selecting pictures and producing the 2018 calendar. The calendar is now printed and will be on sale at the September and subsequent meetings. We hope you will like it! If you can’t get to the meeting and would like to order or buy a calendar, please contact me.

Our next meeting is in September and the competition subject is Harvest. New members are welcome.

September meeting

Our Autumn competition featured “Harvest”; Diane winning with a picture of pumpkins taken in the Beijing Botanical gardens. Equal second were Derek’s mixed berries and Walter’s apples and oranges.

We are very pleased to report the success of the 2018 calendar project, with all printed calendars sold, much praise for the selection of pictures, and a modest profit made for High Lane U3A.

We also drafted our programme for 2018 and discussed how we might assist people interested in photography, but with limited computer and camera experience. Recent developments in smart phones and digital cameras have made camera knowledge much less important than in the past, and meant composing and editing pictures are now much more important. We believed that our monthly competition did help to improve composition and editing skills.

November meeting

Our November competition on "Mills" produced the result:- 1st Jeff - Windmill, Lytham St. Annes; 2nd Derek - Pear Mill, Stockport; 3rd Bob - Torr Vale Mill, New Mills.

Afterwards we agreed next year's programme.

Our subjects for 2018 are Sculptures, Music, Seaside, Butterflies and Moths, and Cottages. We are also planning an autumn photoshoot in Marple.
