Lesson 11. BIDS STARTING WITH TWO OF DIAMONDS, HEARTS OR SPADES

The second type of 2 Opening bid we are going to talk about is also a very strong bid. But the number of points is not nearly as important as the shape of the hand. You have to be able to see 8 winning tricks in your hand alone. Usually this sort of hand contains between 20-22 points, but if you have a long strong suit, you might well have less than that and still qualify for a 2 opener. For instance a 7 carded suit with an Ace, King and Queen at the top, and an outside Ace (one in another suit) has only 17 points even counting extras for the long suit, but it qualifies for a 2 opener because you have 7 sure tricks in the long suit and another one with the Ace.

45. Look at the hand below and decide how many winning tricks it has.
